Oh man, I thought it'd be obvious.

They're fiddling with thermite - a mix of aluminium and iron oxide. Pretty easy to make, tough to light, and used as an incendiary or ghetto welder.

They put some in a flower pot with holes in the bottom, and put the pot on top of an aluminium plate. The flash at the end of the clip is from when the thermite finishes burning through the plate.

Lots of other neat thermite videos on Google, but I picked this one 'cause they seemed like a fun bunch of dorks...

It bothers me that Morgan wasn't in the way. What a DICK!!!

Is thermite reall heavy. They claimed to have 4 lbs of in in this data destroying video.

Shit the link is weird. Search for thermite in google video. It's the Screen Savers one.

My guess was magnesium... it's the only thing I know off the top of my head that burns like that. Of course, my basic knowledge of things chemistry-set is slightly smaller than a thimble, so my default mode is that whatever I've guessed, I've guessed wrong. Thanks for the clarification, DB.

Wow, that screensavers bit was pretty cool. I'd say it probably was something close to 4 pounds, based on the size of the reaction. As for its weight, I'd say it's roughly the weight and density of very fine sand.

Christina, any party that thermite hangs out at, you'll probably see magnesium there as well. With the thermite, you're just burning a metal, aluminium, using an oxidizer, iron oxide, to give it plenty of oxygen. Burning metals are great, but it takes a lot to get them going. That's where the magnesium comes in.

Well, the last time I saw magnesium burning *in person* was HS chem class... Remind me to tell you about Boomer some time; I think you might appreciate some of his tricks. Anyway, even if Boomer was off his rocker, I'm pretty sure he didn't show us any thermite. That might have been enough to convince the school board that he should have retired about three revisions to the chemistry text book ago.

From one Morgan to another, I say get IN the way! Do what you do best. Godspeed, man. Or woman. It could be a woman. With Morgans it is sometimes hard to know.
